The Microsoft Story

Childhood friends Paul Allen and Bill Gates, both passionate about computer programming, were looking to build a profitable company using their complementary skills. They started their first business, Traf-O-Data, in 1972. According to a 1995 Fortune magazine article, Allen came up with the initial moniker "Micro-Soft," a mashup of the phrases "microcomputer" and "software." With the release of Xenix, Microsoft's version of Unix, it entered the operating system market in 1980. However, MS-DOS was responsible for securing the business's leadership. Following the launch of Windows Phone, Microsoft gradually rebranded its product line throughout 2011 and 2012, adopting the principles of the Metro design language in its logos, offerings, services, and websites.
Steve Ballmer declared in August 2013 that he will leave his position as CEO of Microsoft in a year. On February 4, 2014, Satya Nadella, the previous head of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise division, took his place. On the same day, it was revealed that John W. Thompson will succeed Bill Gates as chairman, with Gates resigning to take on a more active role as the company's Technology Advisor.
