What it does: Manufactures and distributes semiconductor devices, dynamic random-access memory, flash memory, and solid-state drives.

Size and presence: At least 37,000 around the world, over 7,500 of which are in Singapore. When Micron increased its production capabilities in Singapore in 2018, the company ended up hiring more than a thousand employees. After this expansion, Micron was considered as one of Singapore's largest electronic employers. 

Best known for: Being one of the world's best chipmakers alongside companies like Sandisk, Seagate, and Smart Global, and a partner of Intel for years. Micron is also known in the tech investment industry as the company that stacked up almost 200% increase in profit from 2016 to 2017.

The good bits: Medical, dental, and vision plans are offered to all employees, even to interns. Life, disability, and retirement plans are also given. Employees can also avail of the company's paid maternity and paternity leave. Micron has an employee stock purchase program where employees can buy Micron stock at a discount. 

The not so good bits: Newly-hired employees should expect immense pressure in the workplace. Most employees put in extra hours every day, even on weekends sometimes.

The Micron Technology Malaysia story

Micron Technology was just an office in a basement in Boise, Idaho in 1978. Founded by integrated circuit engineers Ward Parkinson, Dennis Wilson, and Doug Pitman, Micron used to design semiconductors for Massachusetts company Mostek. When United Technologies acquired Mostek, Micron decided to invest in chip manufacturing in 1981 with Ward's twin brother Joe Parkinson as the company's first CEO. 

The company's primary founders were Idaho businessmen including billionaire J.R. Simplot. In 1984, Micron went public. As the semiconductor industry continued to reap profits, more investors from Idaho wanted in. 

The company went through major changes going into the '90s. In 1994, Joe Parkinson retired as the company's CEO and was replaced by Steve Appleton. Two years later, Micron went into a three-way merger with Minnesota computer manufacturers ZEOS, Micron Computer, and Micron Custom Manufacturing Services (MCMS). This merger increased the production capacity of the company. In 1997, Micron acquired NetFrame Systems as a bid to enter the server industry. 

As the years went on, Micron continued acquiring more tech companies and staked its claim in the world's burgeoning tech industry. In 2019, Micron announced the first microSD memory card to have a storage capacity of 1 terabyte.

Recruitment process

Micron often participates in university internship fairs in Malaysia. Graduating students that apply through internship fairs have their applications processed in one day. The applicants only have to submit their resumes and schedule a same-day appointment where the applicant will go through three rounds of interviews. 

The first interview is conducted by a section manager, then a department manager, and finally a director. During the interview, the applicant will be asked basic questions about their personal and academic background, as well as their technical capabilities. When the applicant is deemed qualified by the first interviewer, the applicant will be called in for the second interview, and so on. The entire process will test the applicants' logical thinking and the efficiency of their thought process. 

For applicants that choose to apply online, the process may take two weeks. Applicants may send their CVs to the HR department directly. Chosen candidates will be called in for three rounds of interviews. Much like the interviews conducted in the universities, candidates need to pass one interview to go to the next one. The interviews are conducted by a section manager, a department manager, and a company director. According to employees who applied online, candidates who are called in for the second interview have a better chance of getting the position. 

Aspiring applicants who want to build a career in Micron can also apply in-person and send their CVs to the HR office. This process may take at least a week. Those who get a callback will go through several rounds of interviews conducted by different managers.

Micron is one of the world's largest and fastest-growing tech companies. Employees are given opportunities to step up and move upwards in the company. Remuneration

Interns and entry-level employees earn at least SGD 1,500 per month. The pay can easily increase as the employee rises through the ranks. Managerial-level employees earn at least SGD 58,000 per month.

Controversies

Micron filed a lawsuit with Taichung District Court in February 2017 and with the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in December of that year, alleging business espionage involving three of UMC's employees -- Steven Chen, Ho Chien-ting and Wang Yung-ming - all of whom worked at Micron Taiwan before joining UMC.

Micron accused the three UMC employees of assisting the Chinese state-owned firm Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit Co., a business partner of the Taiwanese firm, of obtaining confidential business information from the American firm.

After the settlement with Micron, shares in UMC rose 0.16 percent to NT$63.10 (US$2.27) as of 10:27 a.m., coming off a high of NT$64.80 on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
